Sat on the banks of the River Exe, Exeter is Devon’s cathedral city with a history that stretches back beyond the 11th century cathedral and Tudor buildings to Roman occupation.
Unfortunately this historic city suffered in 1942, as part of WW II Baedeker Blitz. Some historic buildings in the heart of the city were destroyed and others, including the Cathedral, were damaged. Large areas of the city centre were then rebuilt in the 1950s and 1960s. Refurbishment and urban redevelopment continues with the city basin being included as part of a £24 million redevelopment scheme. Properties of any age or size can become susceptible to pest problems such as woodworm or issues with condensation.
Exeter has a long history of flooding, which is nearly as old as its cathedral. In the 1960s and 70s after devastating flooding affected more than 1,000 properties flood defences were built. Excess damp from flooding or prolonged heavy rains can enter through the fabric of a property, potentially leading to structural damage and timber decay from penetrating or rising damp. Whilst problems such as dry rot may occur months after the wet event in voids or under floorboards which are out of everyday sight.
