Glasgow is a city located on the banks of the River Clyde, in West Central Scotland. Owing to its westerly location and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, Glasgow is one of Scotland's milder areas. Temperatures are usually higher than most places of equal latitude away from the UK, due to the warming influence of the Gulf Stream. However, this results in less distinct seasons as compared to much of Western Europe. Generally the weather is unsettled and erratic, with cool autumns and increased precipitation whilst summers are overcast and humid. This offers plenty of excess moisture that may eventually be absorbed through walls or floors into the structure of a property, which can lead to issues with timber decay and damp.
The city of Glasgow has a distinct architecture, and is particularly noted for its 19th-century Victorian architecture, and the early-20th-century "Glasgow Style", as developed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The city is known for its tenements – the red and blond sandstone buildings, most of which have been refurbished over time and a significant proportion of properties in North Glasgow are high-rise tower blocks. All of which (new, old or refurbished) could potentially be affected by timber decay through wet or dry rot problems, woodworm or rising damp.
