Wet Rot Treatment & Survey

Wet Rot Treatment from Rentokil

At Rentokil, our specialist technicians have the skills, craftsmanship and treatments necessary to control wet rot.
The stages of wet rot treatment are:

  • Ensure the source of damp or water ingress is cured, so that the timber moisture content falls to below 20%.
  • Remove weakened wood.
  • Apply fungicidal treatment to the remaining timber at risk.
  • Replace all removed timber with treated timber.

Rentokil’s wet rot treatment is covered by a 30-year guarantee, which can be passed on to future owners of the property. We can also offer insurance to cover untreated areas for timber and damp problems by taking out a Rentokil Insurance policy.

Wet Rot Survey by Rentokil

Before Rentokil carries out any wet rot treatment, a Rentokil surveyor will carry out a thorough inspection to assess the extent of the wet rot, and will decide whether there is a need for chemical treatment. The surveyor will also:

  • check for sources of damp that led to the rot.
  • check for associated problems such as other rot (dry rot), damp and insect infestation.
  • inspect other areas that may be at risk.
  • provide the most cost effective solution to your problem.

What is Wet Rot?

Wet rot is a general term used to describe the majority of fungal species responsible for timber decay. Wet rot attacks wood in damp conditions and can cause significant damage over time, if left unidentified and untreated.

How To Identify Wet Rot

  • Wet rot causes distortion, discolouration, softness, cracking and the loss of strength to the timber.
  • Sometimes there is a damp musty smell.
  • In some instances there may be visible fungal growth.

There are many species of wet rot, which attack timber. However, the two most common are called Cellar Fungus (Coniophora puteana) and Mine Fungus (Fibroporia vaillantii).
