Controlled Atmosphere Technology (C.A.T) is a safe and effective fumigation treatment for delicate objects such as museum artefacts, historical clothing, tapestries, antiquities, fragile textiles, paintings, books and antique furniture. Controlled atmosphere fumigation eliminates insect pests such as furniture & leather beetles, carpet & clothes moths, booklice and cockroaches.
It is the inert gases used in controlled atmosphere fumigation that make it suitable to specifically treat very delicate objects, which would be vulnerable to degradation or residue contamination by conventional pesticides.
Objects or commodities are sealed within a specialist polymer membrane bubble (controlled atmosphere) and the air is extracted and replaced with regulated concentrations of Nitrogen or Carbon Dioxide gas. This effectively eliminates all life stages of the insects including eggs and larvae, whilst leaving no harmful residues on the delicate objects that have been fumigated.
Carbon Dioxide fumigation is accepted by The Soil Association and other verifying bodies as a suitable treatment for organic food stuffs. Relatively small quantities (1 to 20 tonnes) of commodities can be treated, although several treatments can be carried out at the same time.
