Tanking membrane is the term used to describe sheets of high-density polyethene dimpled (HDPE) waterproof material which are then studded to line walls and floors, providing a waterproof barrier that keeps Earth retaining walls and underground rooms dry.
The most common application of tanking membrane is as part of a cavity drainage waterproofing system to transform damp basements or cellars into dry and habitable rooms, however, tanking membranes can also be used to solve localised penetrating damp problems. To discuss installing waterproof membrane in your home contact our specialists today on 0800 0121 437.
Tanking membrane is used in cavity drainage systems to manage and control water ingress from Earth retaining walls.
Without an adequate drainage system, any water that penetrates the outer wall due to hydrostatic pressure will remain trapped behind the membrane. Although this will prevent any immediate damp problems in your basement or cellar, without an adequate drainage system this water will remain in place and could eventually lead to some very serious problems like wet rot or dry rot.
With a drainage system installed, however, the water trapped behind the tanking membrane gathers into that system and is simply channelled safely away from the property without any further intervention from you. Drainage can utilise either existing drains or a sump pump, leaving you free to relax in your protected and dry basement or cellar!
The most important point to note is that if the tanking membrane is installed incorrectly, if it tears or punctures during fitting, or if it is not sealed off effectively, then this will compromise the effectiveness of the entire system. That is why we say it is essential that you hire a professional and qualified waterproofing team who can demonstrate their credentials, such as our accreditations from the PCA the British Structural Waterproofing Association and others.
Although each project is custom built and tailored to the exact specifications of the individual room, broadly speaking, our tanking membrane installation process includes:
You are then free to plaster or board over the wall and decorate your basement or cellar however you wish, safe in the knowledge it is now totally waterproof.
