Renowned for its diverse communities, quirky shopping areas, large cultural, music and arts scene, Brighton has been a called “the happiest place to live in the UK” and is a popular destination for tourists. The area was greatly modified by sea bathing for health which became fashionable among the wealthy in the late 18th century. Resorts such as Brighton, Hastings and Worthing developed along the coast, full of Georgian and Victorian architecture. The land area of Brighton expanded from 7 km2 in 1854 to 58 km2 in 1952. New housing estates were established in the acquired areas, including Moulsecoomb, Bevendean, Coldean and Whitehawk. The major expansion of 1928 also incorporated the villages of Patcham, Ovingdean and Rottingdean, and much council housing was built in parts of Woodingdean after the Second World War. To this day, many of the older properties around Brighton are still standing, along with newly built apartments through the centre and detached houses towards the outskirts.
The climate of coastal Sussex is strongly influenced by the sea, which, because of its tendency to warm up slower than land, results in cooler temperatures than inland in the summer. Rainfall during the summer months is mainly from thunderstorms; from January to March heavier rainfall is due to prevailing south-westerly frontal systems drawn in from the Atlantic. If excess moisture from this climate is eventually absorbed through the walls or floors of a property into the fabric of the building, this can lead to timber decay through rising damp or rot problems.
Our skilled experts working around the Brighton area know how pests like woodworm behave and how rising damp or dry rot can affect these and more modern types of properties. Insects such as wood-boring beetles can damage timber commodities being transported by shipping containers through commercial ports. Woodworm may also affect residential properties under the right conditions, as different species of wood-boring beetle often have a preference to particular types of wood.
