Guildford has a wide variety of architectural styles, ranging from the medieval to the 21st century. A number of smaller houses and pubs from the 16th century are still standing and even buildings such as the Guildhall, constructed in the 14th century; which is a noticeable landmark in Guildford. Over more recent years, some buildings have been modernised and refurbished and a range of old and new properties can be found around the outskirts.
Like the rest of Surrey and the British Isles, Guildford has a maritime climate with cool summers and mild winters. Flooding has been a periodical problem along the river Wey, as it flows through Guildford. In the autumn of 1968 the Wey burst it's banks, with flood waters reaching 6 feet deep in some areas of Guildford. At the time it was said to be a 1 in 1,000 year occurrence, yet over Christmas 2013 (just over 40 years later) heavy, prolonged rainfall left many areas saturated with groundwater. Christmas Eve brought extreme weather with strong winds and 57mm of rainfall within a 24 hour period. The river Wey burst it’s bank again causing fluvial flooding throughout Guildford town centre, closing roads and flooding homes and businesses. Months after flood waters have retreated, damp may no longer be visible in a property. Yet moisture levels in some timbers can remain high enough for dry rot to decay the wood.
