What exactly is a wood wasp?

Despite their name and striking appearance, wood wasps are not true wasps. They belong to the Siricidae family of insects, which is a specialised group of sawflies known as wood wasps and horntails. Unlike common wasps or hornets, wood wasps are solitary forest dwellers whose life cycle revolves around timber.

There are 14 species of wood wasp and horntail recorded in the UK, but only six are either native or thought to have established populations in the wild, according to experts at the Natural History Museum.

Only two species are indigenous to the UK, the giant wood wasp (Urocerus gigas) and the steel-blue wood wasp (Sirex juvencus). The remaining species arrived over the last century as uninvited stowaways in imported timber shipments from Europe and North America.

In almost every domestic sighting across England, Scotland and Wales, the insect that appears in homes is the giant wood wasp.

What are the key features of the giant wood wasp?

  • Size: Females are 25 to 40 mm in length, roughly twice the size of a common wasp (Vespula vulgaris).
  • Colouration: Females have black-and-yellow bands across their abdomen, similar to a hornet (to ward off predators). Males are smaller and possess a more uniform, reddish-brown body.
  • The “spike”: A rigid, needle-like tube projects straight out from the rear of the female’s body. While it looks remarkably like a stinger, it is actually an ovipositor, a specialised tool used to drill through bark to lay eggs.

What is the life cycle of a giant wood wasp?

Historically, the insect’s native habitat in Britain was ancient native coniferous woodlands, such as the Caledonian pine forests in Scotland. Today, its range has expanded due to the growth of large-scale conifer plantations, which have allowed the wasp to thrive nationwide.

The life cycle of the giant wood wasp is a multi-year journey spent almost entirely hidden within softwood timber, with only a few weeks spent as an adult. 

Here is a step-by-step breakdown of the giant wood wasp life cycle:

1. Egg deposition

  • Target: In late spring or summer, adult female wood wasps track down stressed, dying or freshly felled coniferous trees (such as Scots pine, larch, Douglas fir or spruce).
  • Drilling: Using her needle-like ovipositor, the female drills through the bark and into the wood.
  • Injecting fungus: Along with the eggs, the female injects spores of symbiotic fungi (mainly Fusarium sporotrichioides and Amylostereum chailletii). These fungi break down cellulose and lignin, making the timber digestible for the future larvae. A. chailletii can also cause extensive damage to forest plantations.

2. The larval stage

  • Hatching: The cigar shaped eggs hatch within 3 to 4 weeks, into cream-coloured larvae with three pairs of short legs on the thorax (the segments behind the head), dark mandibles (jaw) and a short spike at the tip of the abdomen.
  • Tunnelling: The larvae chew into the wood, creating 6-7cm wide cylindrical galleries filled with tightly packed wood dust (frass). These tunnels are round and 15–75 cm (6–30 inches) long.
  • Duration: Because dry or harvested wood provides limited moisture and nutrients, larvae grow very slowly. They remain inside the timber for 2 to 3 years, and occasionally up to 5 or 6 years if the wood is sawn into dry building materials, before they finish growing.

3. The pupal stage

  • Preparing to exit: Once fully grown (up to 40 mm), the larva tunnels towards the surface of the timber, stopping just beneath the surface.
  • Pupal chamber: The larva constructs a pupal chamber lined with silk and frass.
  • Transformation: Over the course of 5 to 6 weeks in early spring, the larva transforms into an adult wasp inside this chamber.

4. Adult emergence

  • Chewing out: During the warm summer months (typically June until early October), the newly transformed adult chews through the remaining thin layer of wood or whatever covering sits on top of it, such as plasterboard, carpet or linoleum, leaving behind a neat 4 mm to 7 mm round exit hole.
  • Mating: Adult wood wasps do not eat; their sole purpose is reproduction. Males gather at the tops of trees to swarm, attracting females.
  • The end of the cycle: Adult wood wasps live for only 2 to 5 weeks. Once a female has laid her eggs (several hundred), she dies.

How wood wasps enter buildings

Wood wasps do not actively invade homes; they are unintentionally brought indoors via infested timber used during construction or renovations. If freshly cut softwood is not sufficiently kiln-dried, wood wasp larvae can survive for years inside it and in timber in a home before maturing and chewing their way out.

Signs of emergence

The primary sign of a wood wasp is an exit hole. As the adult emerges, it will chew through the timber and any covering materials. Homeowners typically find:

  • Large exit holes: Clean, circular piercings measuring 4mm to 7mm across.
  • Surface damage: Holes in decorative finishes like wallpaper or flooring.
  • Coarse frass: Piles of fibrous, packed wood dust left near the exit point.

What should homeowners do if they find a giant wood wasp?

If you find a wood wasp indoors, follow these practical steps:

Step 1: Safely catch and release

Because wood wasps lack a stinger and cannot bite, they present no physical danger to you, your children or your pets.

  • Place a glass or clear container over the insect and slide a piece of stiff card underneath.
  • Release the wood wasp outdoors. 
  • Do not waste money on insect sprays. They are unnecessary as they will not lay fresh eggs inside a building.

Step 2: Search for exit holes

  •  1. Inspect visible and hidden softwood timbers: Look for exit holes in the timber or the covering material.
  • 2. Check the size of the holes: Check that each hole is a clean circle 4–7 mm in diameter.
  • 3. Clear away debris: Remove any coarse shavings or debris around the opening.

Step 3: Repair cosmetic damage

Wood wasps will not re-infest dry timber, so you can fill in the holes without risk of them reappearing.

  • Use interior filler or wood putty to seal holes in walls or timber.
  • Sand smooth and refinish with paint or varnish.
  • Holes in carpets can be repaired by cutting out circular pieces from hidden areas or spare pieces and pushing them in the hole.

Step 4: Short-term monitoring

Watch for a few weeks if you have recent timber work, as remaining adults from the same batch may emerge. Catch and release any further arrivals; once that generation has emerged, the issue is resolved.

What is the difference between wood wasp and woodworm damage?

It is easy to see why the two get confused: both pests leave behind holes in timber and small piles of sawdust. However, treating a wood wasp issue as if it were a woodworm infestation, or vice versa, could cost you thousands of pounds in unnecessary chemical treatments or leave serious structural damage unaddressed.

The three main differences to look for

If you spot damage on a joist, floorboard, or door frame, you can usually determine which insect you are dealing with by looking for three key clues:

1. Hole size and shape

  • Wood wasps: Leave unusually large, perfectly circular exit holes measuring anywhere from 4mm to 7mm in diameter (roughly the width of a standard pencil). You will usually only find one or two isolated holes.
  • Common furniture beetle (Woodworm): Creates much smaller, neat holes measuring 1–2mm. These typically appear in clusters, giving the wood a speckled or “shotgun blast” appearance.
  • House longhorn beetle: If you find oval-shaped holes measuring 6mm to 10mm, you may be dealing with a different timber pest, the house longhorn beetle, which is a serious structural pest of softwood timbers, mostly confined to southeastern England.

2. The nature of the bore dust (frass)

  • Wood wasps: As the adult bites its way out, it pushes coarse, tightly packed wood shavings behind it. The dust is fibrous and often stuck together inside the exit shaft.
  • Woodworm: When the adult beetles emerge, some of their frass spills out of the holes, forming small piles of light-coloured dust on the floor or surfaces beneath the timber.

3. Reinfestation

  • Wood wasps: They do not reinfest seasoned, dry timber indoors. 
  • Woodworm: Adult furniture beetles seek out indoor timber with a moisture content above 12%. Female beetles lay their eggs in existing flight holes or cracks in timber.
