Legend has it that if it rains on St. Swithin’s Day, then the wet weather will continue for 40 days!
Our current mix of sunny humid spells and heavy, torrential rain storms with the potential for hail and lightning means any property across the UK could suffer penetrating damp or even flooding issues.
“St. Swithin’s day if thou dost rain, for forty days it will remain. St. Swithin’s day if thou be fair, for forty days ’twill rain nae mare.”
According to the Met Office there is no evidence that this legend will predict the weather. However there is a grain of truth, as weather often locks into a pattern in early summer, only beginning to change as autumn approaches.
So it would seem we are set for a typical British summer of hot humid spells and torrential downpours. This could well present issues for many homes and businesses that have basements, cellars or vaults that were never designed for modern living, or to cope with the effects of heavy, or persistent rains.
An example is in Aberdeen which received half its expected July rainfall in just a few hours on 7th July. This caused widespread flash flooding, as drainage systems were overcome. Which caused business and homeowners problems protecting their properties from the ingress of water.
They can suffer from penetrating or rising damp and even flooding, and as a result may not be used to their full potential. Waterproof Tanking – using Cavity Drain Membranes that utilise a studded membrane to line the walls and floors to provide a dry internal surface, could be the solution to protecting your property against the excesses of the UK’s summer weather!
