Basement Waterproofing

Many properties have basements, cellars and vaults that were never designed for modern living and as a result they can suffer from damp problems, leaks and flooding. That does not mean these spaces need to remain neglected though. With the correct waterproofing solution, a damp basement or cellar can be transformed into a functional or even habitable space.

Rentokil Property Care offers a range of basement waterproofing and tanking systems that can help any domestic or commercial basement conversion become a reality. If you are interested in getting the best from your basement or cellar, give our team a call on 0800 0121 437 or fill in the contact form below and we will get back to you.

How to Waterproof a Basement

To create a livable space beneath your home we offer two main solutions. Cementitious Tanking which forms an impenetrable barrier to moisture ingress or a Cavity Drain Membrane solution than channels water away from your property using a combination of membranes, drains and pumps. We can even combine both waterproofing systems if that creates the best solution.

When you hire Rentokil Property Care to waterproof your basement or cellar you can expect the following:

  • Our surveyor will inspect your basement and discuss your needs.
  • The surveyor will inform you of the options available to transform your damp basement or cellar.
  • A basement waterproofing system will be designed specifically to meet your requirements.

What is Basement Tanking?

Cementitious tanking utilises a system of cement-based waterproof coatings (also known as Tanking Slurry) to prevent penetrating dampness caused by capillary movement of water moving through earth retaining walls. The tanking coatings can be plastered to provide a smooth surface to decorate.

Cementitious tanking is used in situations where there is no free flowing water or risk of flooding and in small areas where there is an isolated damp problem.

Benefits of Basement Tanking

  • Can be used in small areas and on convoluted surfaces.

  • Does not require a drainage system or a sump and pump.

Basement Waterproofing with Membranes

Cavity Drain Membranes utilise a studded membrane to line the walls and floors to provide a dry internal surface.

  • The walls can then be dry lined or plastered, and the floors can be screeded or overlaid with chipboard or tongue and groove flooring.
  • Sealed systems are used in conjunction with drainage or sump and pump where there is active water or flooding.
  • Ventilated systems are used where there is no visible water and in situations where conventional damp proofing methods are inappropriate.

Both of these systems can be designed to comply with BS8102, which is the code of practice relating to waterproofing underground structures.

Benefits of Cavity Drain Membranes

  • No need to incur expenses and mess removing existing sound plaster

  • Redecoration can normally be carried out quickly as there is no need to wait for system to cure.
