Shortly before the First World War Professor Harold Maxwell-Lefroy of Imperial College, London developed a number of wood preservatives to treat the Deathwatch beetle in the roof of Westminster Great Hall. Such was his success that one gallon drums of Fluids A, B or C were produced in a “cottage industry” for sale to antique dealers and architects, by his company Disinfectants & General Products Limited. He came up with a Trade Mark name “Ento-kill”, but due to a trademark objection, “Rentokil” was registered on 29th September 1924.

The Professor died on October 14th 1925 and his business partner Miss Elizabeth Eades took over the company from the receiver on 23rd December 1925. She started Rentokil Sales Ltd in 1928 to market small bottles of fluid to members of the public.

From that point onwards small numbers of treatments were undertaken on buildings, in particular churches, abbeys and cathedrals. In 1951, the company opened 23 Bedford Square ‘The Woodworm and Dry Rot Centre’ in order to educate the great British public on the perils of timber decay. The service section had grown to such an extent that a separate company was formed on 30th October 1952 called Woodworm & Dry Rot Control Ltd.

On 1st April 1957 the takeover of Rentokil Limited and Woodworm and Dry Rot Control Ltd by British Ratin, became operative and on 1st December 1960 the enlarged company changed its name to “Rentokil Group Limited”.

On the lighter side, Rentokil was requested to provide service vehicles and overalls for the 1979 film ‘Rising Damp’ starring Leonard Rossiter.
