There is a unique character to Edinburgh, with its Old Town of medieval streets (or wynds) and the planned Georgian New Town with its elegant neoclassical buildings giving Scotland’s capital city a diverse array of properties covering many decades.
Edinburgh's position between the coast and hills, it is known as "the windy city", with the prevailing south westerly winds, giving rise to rainfall distributed evenly throughout the year. Vigorous Atlantic depressions, (called European windstorms) can affect the city between October and May, as well as other coastal locations such as Musselburgh, Dunbar and North Queensferry - bringing with them heavy rain, which can be absorbed through walls or floors into the very fabric of buildings. This has the potential to lead to timber decay through dry or wet rot, or problems with rising damp.
Edinburgh's green parks and open spaces like Holyrood Park, Princes Street Gardens, Regent Gardens and The Meadows, can unknowingly offer safe havens to wood-boring beetles, along with numerous lofts, garages, sheds and cellars throughout Edinburgh. Common furniture beetles, are the most widely spread wood-boring beetles in Scotland and their larvae (woodworm) can do a great deal of damage if they enter a property, damaging wooden beams, floors and furniture as they burrow deep into the wood, slowly eating through it over several years. Buildings of any age, style, period or size can be exposed to the risks of wood boring insects, wood rotting fungi or rising damp. These kinds of problems tend be more noticeable in older properties. Unfortunately, the damage that can be caused is not always immediately obvious.
