How to use rat poison

It is advised that rat poison should be used as soon as an infestation occurs.

  • Place loose rat bait in suitably sturdy containers.
  • Always prevent access to rat poison (especially loose grain rat poison) by children, birds and non-target animals.
  • Ensure hands and exposed skin are washed directly after handling rat poison products.
  • It is advisable to wear gloves when dealing with rat poison and disposing of rodent bodies, as there is a risk of diseases such as Salmonella and Weil's disease, which are carried by rats.
  • After rodents have digested enough rodenticide, most will return to their nests or outside burrows before they succumb to the poison.
  • All waste should only be disposed of once it has been double bagged using bin liners (or similar) then placed in a bin with a secure lid.

Where to use rat poison

  • Rat poison should be placed on a flat surface in a secure location.
  • If loose rat poison (grain bait) is being used it should be placed in the trays provided or suitably sturdy containers.
  • Possible indoor locations to position rat poison include under cupboards, behind furniture, in loft spaces, sheds or garages.
  • If the rat poison is positioned outdoors ensure it is placed behind boards or tiles leant against a wall or inside a length of pipe, to ensure no other wildlife or children can access it.
  • Do not place rat poison where food, feed or water could become contaminated.
  • All rodenticide baits should always be kept well away from children, consider using our sealed pre-baited rat killer box if children and pets are likely to use the area. Rodenticides should also be kept away from pets such as rabbits, gerbils, hamsters and pet mice.
  • Please be aware of 'Secondary Poisoning' when dealing with a rodent infestation. This is where an animal is poisoned after consuming another animal that has eaten and digested poison. This can occur in birds of prey such as owls or hawks and mammals such as foxes and badgers. To help avoid this issue please ensure any baits are not accessible to non-target animals and ensure poisoned rodent bodies are disposed of carefully.

How to use rat traps

Rats are neophobic (naturally cautious of new objects) so it will take a little time for them to become used to the traps presence. A suitably attractive bait such as peanut butter, chocolate spread or tuna should be used in the rat trap. Once the rat has been captured, the Advanced Rat Trap easily releases the rat for disposal.

There is a health risk from rats as they carry diseases such as Salmonella, Trichinosis and Weil's disease. Therefore it is always advisable to wear gloves when dealing with the disposal of captured rats and wash hands thoroughly afterwards. All waste should be double bagged in bin liners (or similar) before being placed in a bin with a secure lid.

Where to use rat traps

Rat traps need to be placed on a flat, stable surface within the area of rat activity. Preferably place the rat traps along a wall and floor junction, as rats prefer to travel along the edge of walls.

Always read the product label, product information and precautions before use.
